WAC's D-Day

June 06, 2018

11:30 - 1:00

Speakers: Franklin Berry and Josh Wells

Question: What do the Wichita Aero Club, the 74th Anniversary of D-Day, and Wichita’s B-29 DOC have in common? The answer: June 6, 2018—the 74th anniversary of the Normandy landings in World War II, will be the date for a Wichita Aero Club luncheon at Crestview Country Club that will feature an update on DOC, one of two B-29s in the world that is airworthy.

Doc-June-Event.pngEven though no B-29s participated in the Allied invasion of France (the first ones were being delivered to fight in the Pacific), the airplane that “ended the war” has a strong connection to D-Day, which became known as “the beginning of the end” of the worldwide conflict.

We will mark the occasion of the 74th anniversary of D-Day with our own D-Day, but in this case, the “D” will represent DOC.

Plan to join us for an interesting program. Franklin Berry, a longtime member of DOC’s FRIENDS, will provide a historical overview of the B-29 and DOC’s restoration and Josh Wells, DOC’s official spokesman, will update us on DOC’s schedule of appearances and airshows this summer, progress on DOC’s Hangar and Educational Center, which is currently under construction at Eisenhower National Airport, and the commemorative bricks which are currently being sold to help finance the hangar’s construction. They’ll provide a lasting reminder of the many volunteers and supporters who helped restore DOC to the air.

“The Wichita Aero Club” is pleased to be an enthusiastic partner with DOC’s FRIENDS and the many volunteers and supporters of this great symbol of Wichita’s importance and contribution to the war effort,” said Dave Franson, WAC President. “This will be an interesting and informative presentation—complete with lots of new pictures and details about DOC. It will build the previous information we’ve received and provide us with another opportunity to support DOC as a tribute to all those who sacrificed so much to defend our freedom and way of life.”
