WAC March Luncheon, Wednesday, March 21
March 21, 2012
Doubletree by Hilton Hotel at Wichita Airport
Noon-1:30 PM
Hal Shevers, Founder and CEO of Sporty’s Pilot Shop will talk about his organization’s half-century in aviation…and his personal involvement in numerous philanthropic and flight training efforts. Following graduation from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, Hal marketed a small radio that picked up airport control towers. He sold the radio to pilots by mail, using the trunk of his car as his first warehouse. This was the birth of Sporty’s Pilot Shop (1961).
In the early days of Sporty’s, Hal supplemented his income by giving flight and ground instruction. He was a pioneer in the first three-day ground school courses, which he developed (1963) and taught for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (1966).
In 1971, Sporty’s Pilot Shop moved to Clermont County/Sporty’s Airport, where it continues to expand. Hal’s wife, Sandy, whom he married in 1965, is actively involved with Sporty’s. While Hal participates in many national aviation organizations, the Aviation Exploring Committee of the Boy Scouts of America is a priority for him since he is an Eagle Scout. He was awarded the Boy Scouts’ Distinguished Eagle for his lifetime achievements in aviation. Hal is an Airline Transport certificated pilot with more than 10,000 hours.
